Very interesting theory the exploding universe! could it be true - what evidence is there for this theory, or is this a theory that just fabricated to explain the unknown? |

There is a popular misconception over the term 'Big Bang'.
The was coined by Hoyle, an opponent to a theory of sudden expansion of the universe.
In fact, the initial theory of sudden expansion was by a Belgian priest named Georges Lemaître in the 1920's. Hoyle was one that opposed it years later, as is the way with scientific peer review, and also as the very idea to many gave more credence to the aspect that the universe had a 'beginning' (ironic how religions now oppose the theory, however most people just don't understand the concepts behind what a scientific theory actually is, I will go into this later.)
There was no explosion, and the theory does not talk about an 'explosion'. It is the theory on how the universe, space and time, is expanding.
There is solid evidence in the form of cosmic microwave radiation, discovered by Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson, Hubble has provided clear observations that galaxies are speeding away from us in all directions.
Now to explain what a scientific theory is, as there is a HUGE amount of misconceptions, explicitly from the lay folk, because of the term 'Theory'
A scientific Theory is an explanation the 'how' of observable, testable, fact.
For example, gravity exists, it is a fact, as to how it works that is the Theory of Gravity.
Evolution is fact, the Theory of Evolution is HOW evolution occurs. (BTW the theory of evolution is not about WHERE or HOW life started, it is about the process of evolutionary change that is observable, and fact.)
Thus, the 'Big Bang', or the Theory of the sudden expansion of the universe, is about how that expansion works. It does not cover nor try to cover how matter came in to being, that is something that has many theories, that one day, one major theory will start having more and more factual evidence backing it up, than the others, and become a Theory that is built on, tested, and scientists will try and prove wrong as part of the process. There are a number of theories about how the universe came to exist.
So, if we are discussing this, I would like some understanding of what scientific Theories actually mean, rather than placing lay-mans terminology upon scientific terminology, that means something totally different. |
